Raiders Super Bowl odds tumble with Davante trade

Davante Adams Green Bay Packers NFL Free Agency 2022

Wow, this AFC West arms race is something else – the latest move sees the Las Vegas Raiders trading with the Green Bay Packers to acquire superstar WR Davante Adams.

In an astonishing plot twist the Pack dealt Adams to the Raiders Thursday in a deal which sees Las Vegas give up first and second-round picks in the upcoming NFL Draft (numbers 22 and 53 overall).

The deal will also see Adams become the NFL’s highest-paid wide receiver. His new five-year Raiders deal is worth a staggrering $141.25million, an average of $28.25million per year. That surpasses DeAndre Hopkins and his contract in Arizona. His two-year, $54.5million deal averages $27.25million.

Plot twist in Green Bay

A week ago this would have seemed unthinkable for Green Bay. Aaron Rodgers had signed a contract extension, which then allowed the Pack to franchise tag Davante to avoid him hitting the open market.

Adams unsurprisingly was not happy with being tagged and said he would not play under it for the 2022 season. It appears that attempts to get a long-term extension done did not immediately bear fruit and the offer from the Raiders was just too good to turn down.

We know of course expect Green Bay to use some of that newly-acquired draft capital to pick up a new WR in the draft, but how does it affect the Raiders odds?

Las Vegas is clearly #4 of 4 among the AFC West superpowers but this does move them closer to Kansas City, Denver and the Los Angeles Chargers.

The Raiders had already made a big splash on defense by hoovering up Arizona pass rusher Chandler Jones on a three-year-deal worth around $53million. They had already extended their existing DE star Maxx Crosby with a new four-year pact worth more than $98million.

What odds are the Raiders to win the Super Bowl?

While there is nothing like upgrading at QB to change your Super Bowl odds, the Raiders are moving with most of those online bookmakers.

Before the Adams trade they were generally a +6000 shot (bet $100 to win $6000) to win Super Bowl LVI next February. Well now those odds are down to +3500 in a number of places. Basically they have almost halved.

Don’t forget that there is already chemistry (from a while back though) between Raiders QB Derek Carr and Adams. They played together in college at Fresno State.

Davante is coming off another terrific year in Green Bay – he hauled in 123 passes for 1553 yards with 11 TDs. All in all, he produced 8121 receiving yards and 73 scores during his time with the Packers.

Green Bay Packers WR Depth Chart

While all of this is terrific news for Vegas, not so much for the Packers. They are left with pretty much nothing at the WR position. They do of course have plenty of draft capital and cap space thanks to the Adams trade.

The current WR depth chart for the Packers is:

  • Randall Cobb
  • Allen Lazard
  • Amari Rodgers
  • Malik Taylor
  • Juwann Winfree
  • David Moore
  • Rico Gafford
  • Josh Malone
