Joe Joyce vs Joseph Parker

Date: Saturday September 24, 2022

Venue: AO Arena, Manchester, England

U.S. TV: ESPN+

Ring Walks: 5pm Eastern Time, 2pm Pacific Time

Joe Joyce and Joseph Parker collide for the WBO’s interim heavyweight title at the Manchester Arena on Saturday night in what looks a terrific contest on paper. Joyce is the betting favorite at -190 (bet $190 to win $100) but the sportsbooks are not entirely convinced, with Parker himself just +185 (bet $100 to win $185).

This fight is something of a rarity in the modern game. Joyce and Parker are both in the world’s top 10, and in effect both could have sat it out and waited for an inevitable championship fight down the line. Respect then to both men for risking their health and their respective world ranking this weekend.

Joyce is technically the home fighter on Saturday but Parker has fought in the UK five times before and trains in Morecambe, Lancashire these days with coach Andy Lee.

He suffered back-to-back unanimous points defeats to Anthony Joshua and Dillian Whyte in 2018 – the former loss was for the IBF, WBA, WBO and IBO titles in Cardiff on a night when he seemed to freeze –  but those are the only defeats in a pro career which began just over a decade ago.

Parker now lives in Morecambe with Tyson Fury, ‘The Gypsy King’ who holds the WBC and lineal heavyweight titles. He has improved since hooking up with Irishman Lee, and looks a live dog on Saturday.

Joyce is unbeaten in 14 professional fights and has not tasted defeat since he lost controversially in the Olympic final in 2016. ‘The Juggernaut’ is a no-nonsense heavyweight; a fighter who just keeps chugging forward with an engine which allows him to go all night. Boxing’s answer to Michael Myers…

Joyce has significant height and reach advantages this weekend, and if rumors are to be believed has the best chin in boxing. The 37-year-old Putney heavyweight seems to take shots flush without even flinching, with fellow British heavyweight Johnny Fisher explaining this strange phenomenon by claiming Joyce’s bone density test is six times that of a normal human being.

The boxing media is split on how this one will play out. New Zealand box-puncher Parker has never been stopped and Joyce has knocked out 13 of the 14 men he has beaten so far.

The 30-2 (21) Parker is a fundamentally sound heavyweight with real cojones. However the 14-0 (13) Joyce will have a 4” reach advantage this weekend and his jab could be the key punch in this fight.

Joyce’s jab was brilliant when he took care of hot prospect Daniel Dubois in 2020, and if he can establish it early in Manchester he is going to take some stopping. It’s a fight which could be a difficult watch at times, with the violence ebbing back and forth and both men absorbing hellacious punishment.

However Joyce is unbelievably fit, and if Parker cannot put a dent in him with his shots the pick is for ‘The Juggernaut’ to keep pushing forward all night and get the job done on points at odds of +150.
