Gervonta Davis came through another huge showdown this Saturday night, and the odds are he could be about to make another huge career decision too.
‘Tank’ – possibly the most exciting fighter in the whole of boxing right now – appears ready to move away from his current promotional partnership with (Floyd) Mayweather Promotions.
It looks like Gervonta could be about to do what Floyd once so famously did – branch out on his own to become a promotional free agent.
Mayweather remember managed to buy his way out of a contract with Bob Arum’s Top Rank and that paved the way for ‘Pretty Boy Floyd’ to become ‘Money May’, starting with that megamatch vs Oscar De La Hoya in 2007.
Now ‘Tank’ could be about to go down the same path, telling ‘The Last Stand’ podcast: “I feel I need to be the one that controls my career. It’s time. Everybody don’t need to have them training wheels on them forever.”
There are huge fights out there after ‘Tank’ produced a crushing left hand to stop Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero in the sixth round of a much-hyped Showtime PPV in Brooklyn Saturday night.
Boxing’s lightweight division is stacked with superstars – Tank has the likes of Ryan Garcia, George Kambosos Jr, Devin Haney, Vasiliy Lomachenko and Teofimo Lopez as potential future opponents.
We need to see the Baltimore man in fights like that – the guy is true PPV material. Bring it on…
Gervonta Davis Next Fight & Odds
Davis was a heavy favorite to defeat Romero at Barclays Center and he duly did what was expected – producing another highlight-reel finish in the process.
Now we wait to see whether he stays with Mayweather Promotions or whether he does branch out as a promotional free agent. The latter would immediately open up the potential for those superfights we listed.
Garcia would be a massive confrontation, while a rumble vs the winner of Kambosos vs Haney for all the marbles at 135lbs would be pretty sweet too.
Playing the field and taking the best fights with the highest bidder (a la P4P king Canelo Alvarez) should really appeal to Gervonta. And it’s the way his mentor Mayweather made billions of dollars.
Davis of course has what Floyd didn’t have – absolutely concussive punching power. Wow.
Next Fight Date & Live Stream
We will announce details of Gervonta’s next fight here, along with the latest rumors in the countdown, here.
Gervonta Davis Weight
Gervonta has had weight struggles in the past, but no worries at all for that win over Rolly.
Davis tipped the scales at 133.75lbs – half a pound lighter than Rolly and more than a pound inside the lightweight limit of 135lbs.
Gervonta Davis Tickets
Gervonta is absolute box office – a huge puncher who has the style and swagger to fill most arenas.
He is a proven ticket seller, having drawn big live gates to a number of U.S. cities, and he advertised that ability again Saturday, filling Barclays Center after a wild buildup. Gotta give props to Rolly too – he played the perfect wing man for what became a huge deal ahead of the bout.

How many belts does Gervonta have in 2022?
Davis is a three-weight world champion, currently operating in a stacked lightweight division.
The WBA titlist (regular not super), Davis could yet face the likes of Haney, Garcia, Lopez and Lomachenko in what would all be absolute superfights at 135lbs.
If ‘Tank’ does go it along as a free agent those fights would all of a sudden become very possible. Garcia is aligned to Golden Boy and DAZN, while the other three are all aligned to Bob Arum’s Top Rank and ESPN.
Kambosos Jr currently holds the IBF, WBA and WBO titles while Haney holds the WBC. They meet in Australia on June 5 (June 4 in the U.S.) in a huge unification match. If ‘Tank’ wants the titles the winner of that fight should be his number one target.
