Canelo Odds as Alvarez wants Bivol after GGG 3 win

Sep 18, 2022Dec 27, 2022 Stryker Maguire

‘Canelo’Alvarez proved the odds correct with a dominant victory over Gennadiy ‘GGG’ Golovkin in their long-awaited trilogy fight in Vegas.

The Mexican megastar started fast against the 40-year-old Golovkin, setting a pace which his ageing opponent could not match – for eight rounds at least. ‘GGG’ did improve in the closing rounds, but it was way too late to get a decision in what is now Canelo’s town.

If anything the scorecards appeared lop-sided in favor of Golovkin – he lost 116-112 and 115-113 twice – the latter score laughable in the context of the fight. Most experts would struggle to give Golovkin more than three rounds, period. The result did land our prefight boxing pick – Canelo to win by Decision or Technical Decision.

Back at his favored 168lbs super-middleweight limit after that upset loss to Dmitry Bivol, Canelo (now 58-2-2) looked sharp and powerful and he dominated center ring as he had in the second fight vs Golovkin way back in 2018.

Golovkin meanwhile looked like an old fighter who was well on the road to being shot – he just could not pull the trigger when it mattered.

Making picks and predictions in boxing is never easy, but here is where things stand as the dust settles:

Canelo Next Fight & Odds

We found out immediately postfight on Saturday night where Canelo is heading next. And it’s a two-part answer, starting with the operating room and ending with the aforementioned Bivol.

Alvarez revealed that an injury to his left hand will now require surgery before he fights again – he said in postfight interviews that he cannot hold a glass in that wounded paw. Ouch.

He did say that he wants to go back up to 175lbs and light-heavyweight for a rematch with Bivol – a bout he would very likely start as the underdog. When we asked sportsbooks how they would set the line for Canelo vs Bivol 2, the answer was clear. Bivol would start around -200 with Canelo around +150.

While Canelo is now set to have that injured hand fixed, Bivol has a fight to get through before he can think about Canelo again – that is vs ‘Zurdo’ Ramirez in the Middle East on November 5.

Canelo Betting Picks & Predictions

As we told you, our bet Saturday was Canelo to win by Decision or Technical Decision at +105 – you can check out our regular boxing betting picks here.

We will of course have expert and free picks for Canelo’s next fight – whether it is vs Bivol or somebody else.

Canelo Next Fight: Date and live stream

Both of Canelo’s fights in 2022 – the loss vs Bivol and the win vs GGG – aired on streaming platform as part of a two-fight deal worth a rumored $100million. Nice work

That DAZN deal of course was for two fights – before that he faced Caleb Plant in a super-middleweight unification showdown on Showtime last November.

Canelo of course is a free agent promotionally after that acrimonious split with Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions, so again we expect a massive bidding war between Showtime and DAZN to air his next bout/s.

Canelo Weight

Canelo right now is back at his favorite weight class of super-middleweight and 168lbs – he weighed in at 167.4lbs vs Golovkin.

As we said though, he is hoping to go back up to light-heavy and 175lbs for a rematch vs Bivol next.

Canelo Tickets

Canelo is generally the hottest ticket in boxing – not surprisingly his fights draw tens of thousands of Mexican fight fans to boxing hotspots like Las Vegas. He also drew more than 70,000 to AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas for that May 2021 defeat of Billy Joe Saunders.

Canelo tickets normally start at around $300 and go up to literally thousands for ringside positions.

How many belts does Canelo have in 2022?

Canelo completed unifying the major titles at super-middleweight in 2021. He defeated Britain’s Callum Smith in December 2020 to claim the WBC and WBA titles, then stopped another Briton Billy Joe Saunders in May 2021 to add the WBO title. The stoppage of Plant in November 2021 added the IBF strap to Canelo’s collection and meant he had the full set at 168lbs.

All of Canelo’s super-middleweight titles were on the line in the Golovkin trilogy and he did of course retain them.

Why do they call him Canelo?

Pretty simple, and it’s all down to his red hair. Canelo is Spanish for ‘cinnamon’. All makes sense now, right?

How do betting odds work in boxing?

Boxing betting works pretty much the same way as other sports do.

The simplest bet of all is the money line – where you just bet a fighter to win.

If your pick – say Canelo – is -400, you win $100 for every $400 you bet. Tough sledding.

If your pick – say Golovkin – is +400, you win $400 for every $100 you put down.

As well as money line odds, there are a ton of prop bets and other special markets. You can bet on the method of victory or even what round the fight will end.

Basically there is a ton of betting fun out there every time a big fight happens.

Betting signup bonuses for Canelo fights

Every time Canelo fights the online sportsbooks offer great signup bonuses to entice new customers.

For example they might offer you +5000 that he wins, even though the money line is -600. The flip side is you’ll likely only be able to stake a small amount (maybe as low as a dollar), and you’ll need to be a new customer.

Stay across our signup bonuses page for all the latest and best promotional offers.

How much will I win if I bet on Canelo?

That depends on who he is fighting, and what the odds are. If he goes for the Bivol rematch next he is likely to be the underdog for the first time since 2018 and the second Golovkin fight. He is likely to be in + odds territory so if you are a Canelo fan, there is money to be made.

Who is favored in the Canelo fight?

Canelo was a +450 favorite (bet $450 to win $100) to beat Golovkin in their trilogy. We wait now to find out who he fights next, and what the odds will be.

How old is Canelo?

The Mexican megastar is currently 32 years old and he will turn 33 on July 18, 2023.

How big of an underdog was Bivol?

Canelo was expected to dispose of the Russian comfortably – despite his unbeaten record Bivol was a +350 underdog to win the fight. That’s an implied win probability of just 22 percent.
