Haney vs Linares preview, prediction odds and picks

May 29, 2021Jun 11, 2021 Stryker Maguire

The exciting Devin Haney takes another step on the road to what he hopes will be boxing superstardom when he returns to action vs modern-day great Jorge Linares Saturday night (May 29).

Haney, just 22, is the reigning WBC world champion in a stacked lightweight division which includes Ryan Garcia, Vasiliy Lomachenko, Teofimo Lopez and Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis. An absolutely stellar lineup.

We hope these guys all fight each other at some stage – the potential matchups are off-the-charts good. But for now Haney will continue his education with a stern test against the tough and talented Linares (47-5).

Here is all you the boxing betting information you need about their upcoming showdown in Las Vegas.

Haney vs Linares odds

This might be an enticing matchup, but the online bookmakers see only one result. Young gun Haney seeing off the ageing warrior Linares (35 years old and with two stoppage defeats in his last five).

Devin opened up at best odds of -850 but the money is coming for him, and the best available now is -1000 (bet $1000 to win $100). He is as short as -1430 in places. You can bet Jorge at +900 now meanwhile, after he was +725 when the line opened. The draw is as big as +2200.

Latest Haney vs Linares odds from leading sportsbooks:

  • DraftKings: -1430 Haney, +750 Linares, +2200 Draw
  • FanDuel: -1100 Haney, +900 Linares, +2000 Draw
  • BetMGM: -1000 Haney, +700 Linares, +2000 Draw
  • PointsBet: -1112 Haney, +625 Linares
  • Borgata Sports: -1000 Haney, +700 Linares, +2000 Draw
  • bet365: -1400 Haney, +800 Linares
  • Unibet: -1430, +750 Linares, +2200 Draw
  • SugarHouse: -1430 Haney, +750 Linares, +2200 Draw
  • BetAmerica: -1429 Haney, +750 Linares
  • Resorts: -1429 Haney, +750 Linares,

Haney vs Linares predictions and pick

Unless you’re a high roller and arriving in Vegas by private jet, there is little value in betting on the money line with Haney at -1000. If you fancy the upset Linares does rate better value, but we don’t believe he can roll back the clock enough to get the W here.

Instead we prefer Haney to win but over the full 12 rounds. He has only 15 KOs in 25 victories – hardly devastating. He was also a little disappointing last time out when failing to dispatch the waning 38-year-old Yuriorkis Gamboa.

That one went the full 12 and while Haney was clearly the better man throughout, he never looked like closing the show early.

We love Linares’ style and his cojones down the years, and we expect to give a good account of himself Saturday. It just won’t be enough to get the decision.

OddsCritic Pick: Devin Haney to win by Decision or Technical Decision at +188 (bet365)

What time does the fight start?

Haney vs Linares takes place on Saturday May 29 at the Michelob Ultra Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Ring walks for the main event are expected at around 2300 ET (2000 PT, local time).

How to watch Haney vs Linares on TV

Haney vs Linares will be streamed live by DAZN, the so-called ‘Netflix of sports’.

The platform – initially based out of the UK – has made huge waves in the U.S. boxing market since launching in 2018. It inked promoter Eddie Hearn to a $1billion eight-year deal and P4P king Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez to a $365million pact.

You can subscribe to DAZN for a monthly fee of $19.99 or an annual cost of $99.99. Already this month the channel has shown Canelo’s stoppage win over Billy Joe Saunders in Dallas.

Haney vs Linares weights

The weigh-in for Haney vs Linares took place Friday afternoon in Las Vegas.

Haney came in right on the lightweight limit of 135lbs, while Linares was a pound lighter at 134.

As you would expect, both men looked in terrific shape for Saturday.

Devin Haney record

Devin Haney, now resident in Vegas, was born in San Francisco on November 17, 1998. He is now 22 years old.

Haney, known as ‘The Dream’, has a professional record of 25-0 with 15 of those victories coming inside distance.

This supremely talented technician has defended the WBC lightweight strap twice, most recently in a unanimous decision over Yuriorkis Gamboa in Florida last November.

While he is rated highly by the boxing crowd, Haney has yet to mix it with any of the division’s true big guns, and Linares should at least give us another decent benchmark.

Jorge Linares record

Jorge Linares was born in Barinas, Venezuela on August 22, 1985 and he is now 35 years old.

‘El Nino de Oro’ (The Golden Boy) has a pro resume of 47-5 with 29 of those wins coming by way of KO.

As stated, there is little doubt his powers are starting to wane, with two stoppage defeats by Lomachenko and Pablo Cesar Cano in his last five bouts. He did though have Loma on the floor before eventually losing their matchup in Madison Square Garden in 2018.

Linares has had a stellar career and won world titles in three different weight classes. The only questions left are how much does he have left? And will he be a first-ballot Hall of Famer?

We should get the answer to the first of those questions May 29.
