Presidential Betting Odds: DeSantis level with Trump

Aug 05, 2022Dec 23, 2022 Stryker Maguire

We still have two years until the next Presidential Election reaches the business end, but the betting odds already provide a fascinating sub-plot.

Joe Biden is just over a year into his Presidency, and things are not going too well. COVID is running riot and the economy (along with Wall Street) is tanking. Can he turn it around?

One Donald Trump of course is waiting in the wings, and what not long ago seemed an impossibility (that he would ever be allowed to run the country again) is now a distinct possibility.

Latest Presidential Odds

It’s pretty rare at this stage of the presidential cycle for the incumbent not to be a clear favorite to be re-elected, but that’s where we stand ahead of the 2024 election.

Joe Biden has stated he intends to run for the office again, but sportsbooks are yet to be convinced – Biden is third favorite at +650 (bet $100 to win $650) to retain his position for a second term.

Biden has suffered a stormy first year in the role, overseeing the continuation of the COVID-19 pandemic, the withdrawal of the US presence in Afghanistan and recently the response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The favourite to be Biden’s successor is his predecessor, former president Donald Trump, who heads the market as a +275 shot. Trump, who faces numerous legal challenges, is far from certain to earn the nomination of the Republican party but has indicated his intention to run. Also with Trump on +275 – dead level – is Florida governor Ron DeSantis. Beloved by the Republican establishment, Ron has come in for significant betting support in recent weeks. He was a +600 shot a few short months ago.

On the Democrats’ side, current VP Kamala Harris comes next at +1400 along with California governor Gavin Newsom. Then it is Kamala’s predecessor as VP, Mike Pence, on +2200. Pence has distanced himself from Trump in recent months, criticising his former boss’s role in instigating the violent protests at the Capitol last January. Also on +2200 is Biden’s current transport secretary Pete Buttigieg.

The betting also features former First Ladies Michelle Obama (+3300) and Hillary Clinton (+5000), film star Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson (+5000), and FOX News broadcaster Tucker Carlson (+10000). The field will likely be whittled down to two after the party primaries are resolved in June 2024, with a head-to-head contest taking place between the nominees in November of that year.
