Boxing’s P4P king Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez already has a pretty busy 2022 lined up, and it could get even busier with a potential trip to London being lined up for December.
The Mexican megastar has a huge date with Russian WBA heavyweight king Dmitry Bivol in Las Vegas on Saturday May 7 (live on DAZN PPV). And if he comes through that successfully that eagerly-awaited trilogy fight with Gennadiy ‘GGG’ Golovkin is finally set to go down on September 17.
If all that wasn’t enough, the man who is promoting Canelo for those bouts – Englishman Eddie Hearn – says Alvarez is keen to cross the pond for a bout in England before the end of 2022.
Hearn on ‘Canelo’ plan
He told talkSPORT: “Canelo wants to fight in London in December. We’ve got the mandatory for his super-middleweight championship and the mandatory for his light-heavyweight championship.”
So which fighters are in the right spot to fill those gaps if Canelo does indeed travel to the UK before Christmas. No surprises – it is more Hearn fighters in the shape of super-middleweight John Ryder and light-heavies Joshua Buatsi and Craig Richards.
Hearn went on: “So John Ryder or [the winner of] Joshua Buatsi vs Craig Richards. We’re well-placed to provide him for one of those fights in London. Buatsi vs Richards is a fight where the winner can stake a claim to be in those kinds of fights with Canelo.”
At least Hearn is man enough to admit that any of those names would start as huge underdog vs Canelo.
“At the moment they’re two domestic, world-class prospects. You need to go out there and be involved in a big fight like that at the O2 to start calling out a legend like Canelo Alvarez. He’s going to want a dance partner in the UK.”
